Markus Mehr - WATERSHED 1. Day 17 05:25 2. Day 15 05:11 3. White Dove Black Sky 03:16 4. Day 7 04:12 My hometown is very old, and despite severe damage during World War II, many historic buildings, walls, and structures are still well-preserved and continue to shape the cityscape today. Following a successful exhibition (Pressure), I was invited to compose a sound installation for one of the towers of the city wall. The medieval tower once served as a supply gate through which raftsmen and merchants delivered their goods. At the same time, the tower served as a border post and was part of the city’s surveillance and defensive system. I wanted to focus my work on this second aspect of the tower. Like many others, I was confronted not only with the incomprehensible reality of the events but also with urgent questions concerning security and freedom. Feelings of helplessness, fear, and threat suddenly became omnipresent. I decided to record and work with videos available on YouTube, including audio material that was often emotionally and technically challenging. The resulting pieces are based on recordings made on the 7th, 15th and 17th days after Russia’s attack. The recordings underwent my usual working processes; synthetic sounds were added only very sparingly. The works therefore consist predominantly of field recordings, or found sounds, originating from an environment I have never personally experienced, captured at a defining moment in human history. I understand WATERSHED as a document of its time, an auditory experience of a past that many believed had been overcome in the history of modern Europe. It reflects a period in which the world—long before the beginning of Russia’s attack in 2022—has been changing before our eyes at a breathtaking pace, often not for the better, and with an uncertain outcome. It is a modest expression of solidarity with the soldiers and people of Ukraine in their struggle for freedom and democracy. The four pieces featured in the installation have been substantially reworked for this EP. The installation itself, including additional pieces based on recordings made within the tower, can still be experienced during the summer months. Augsburg, October 2026 released October 23, 2026
