Adrift Across the Strait 04:14 Ambient, Minimal, Post Classical Former meteorology student Jeff Greinke treats sound the way weather treats a landscape: slowly, atmospherically, in layers. On his new ambient electronic album, he turns that same sensibility toward restraint. Greinke works with fewer elements, more space, and a sharper focus on mood over motion – music built to be felt as much as heard. Tones are allowed to hang in open air. Melodic gestures dissolve before they resolve. The result is unmistakably Greinke – evocative, emotional, quietly mysterious – achieved this time with far less in service of far more. As Greinke notes, "I wanted to see how much I could say with less; how much atmosphere, depth and emotion I could conjure with less sonic activity. This record is about utilizing restraint as a creative tool.” For more than four decades across over two dozen albums, Greinke has explored a wide range of approaches toward making his signature atmospheric and evocative sonic landscapes, whether it be derived from small ensembles of strings, horns and percussion, solely from layered synthesizers, or a hybrid amalgam of acoustic and electronic instruments. On LAND OF ICE AND FOG, Greinke pulls back from his dense multilayered soundscapes, embracing a more minimal, spacious sound. Of the seven tracks, "Bells in Fog" and "Over Land" are co-composed by Greinke and longtime friend and composer Steve Peters. Peters' own minimalist work was the impetus for Greinke to embark on a less-is-more path with this album. It's music created for deep, close, patient listening. Moving like weather across a half-seen landscape, bells are heard through mist, clouds settle on unseen peaks, a harbor emptied of everything but memories. Ambient music at its most evocative: patient, uncluttered, and quietly immersive. Unmistakably Greinke! released September 25, 2026
