It was transported to Gatchina as the VVR-M Reactor at the LNPI had the ultracold neutron beam required to conduct experiments. The name – Kovsh, or "bucket" in Russian – reflected the facility's operating principle: it literally scooped neutrons from the beam, held them in a vessel using gravity, and then "poured" them onto a detector for counting. The experiments allowed measuring neutron lifetime with an accuracy of 888.4 ± 2.9 seconds, which was record-breaking at the time, and identify the "ultracold neutron storage anomaly".
