➖➖➖➖ 📸 Nikolay Nikolaevich Bogoliubov – Honorary Doctor of University of Helsinki In February 1974, during a work visit to Finland, the JINR Director was invited to the country's oldest university. The first photo shows the moment the honorary degree was awarded: Professor Erik Gustav Elfving and Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics Martti Tienari present the academician with his doctoral hat and sword. According to the Finnish tradition, the doctoral hat symbolises the researcher's freedom of scientific thought and independence, while the doctoral sword symbolises their readiness to defend truth and knowledge, as well as their responsibility to society. Following the award ceremony, Nikolay Bogoliubov delivered a lecture entitled "The importance of fundamental research in nuclear physics" (photo 2). #jinr_archive
