This decision appears to be the result of directives issued to the U.S. State Department under your administration. However, this is only the immediate reason for my appeal. I am deeply concerned about a broader issue: the refusal to grant political asylum to thousands of citizens of Russia and Ukraine who fled to the United States to escape war and political repression. In effect, your administration risks repeating a grave historical mistake — one later described as a crime — when, after World War II, the West handed over two million individuals, both Soviet citizens and non-citizens, to Stalin. Many were executed immediately; many others were sent to the Gulag. So far, only dozens of refugees from Russia and Ukraine who escaped the war have been deported from the United States. This process must be stopped without delay. Mr. President, I am one of your supporters. I am among those politicians, bloggers, and experts whom our opponents — the Democrats — have derisively referred to as “Trumpists.” I urge you to correct this mistake before it becomes irreversible.
